The Loophead Summer Hedge School was set up in 2012-2013 by professional artist, author and naturalist Carmel Madigan. Carmel was born and grew up at Loophead in the Atlantic swept Bridges of Ross area. She has develop the school based on the close study of its wild coastal and hedgerow environment over a period of ten years. This also culminated in the publication of two books on the region by Carmel. The school is run during the summer period from early July to mid-August approximately, and comprises a broad range of leisure learning modules. Each year a programme is produced and is normally available both in print and to download from early February. The modules include a range of Art courses, Art and nature mixed courses, courses on seaweed, sealife and botany, all developed around the rich natural environment at Loophead. Modules are normally run over a period of a couple of days to a full week and participants can pick and choose one course or a range of courses. There are a small number of family run Bed and breakfasts nearby and Carmel encourages participants to stay local, as it is best for the participants to become as immersed as possible in the natural environment on location while attending the school.
Since its inception, the school has gone from strength to strength and has developed an approved DES summer course for teachers which is run in early July. In 2017, we ran two DES approved Teachers Summer Courses, which were very popular and fully booked. The school has also been successful in 2016 in winning a contract to deliver the Explorers Education Programme to primary schools throughout counties Clare and Limerick on behalf of the Marine Institute.
Each year a new module or two is introduced, and the 2016 brochure is available to download on the homepage as a taster of what's on offer.
We hope that a summer course at the Loophead Summer Hedge School will appeal to you in the forthcoming year, and it is always advised to book early for courses as participant numbers are kept low for most courses. Booking can be done through this website when the programme is live.
